According to data from CTV News in Ontario, there is a pressing issue regarding the comprehension of the new stay-at-home rules. Many residents in the province are finding it challenging to interpret and act upon the COVID-19 data provided. The main focus of the analytical dashboard is to present data variances to the user to quickly convey critical input to users, providing one-stop information used for analysis and decision-making clearly. As for most Ontario dashboards, the relevant data is presented in a way that is rather confusing and not intuitive to use. The data insights were more focused on the general overview of COVID-19 and its main indexes in the province (including data on hospitalization and death) rather than on the presentation of the data that may be useful to a user in order to respond to the situation in a certain area. Understanding what people are talking about regarding the pandemic, I took a brief method to unearth some useful insights from the word cloud from public Twitter data about COVID-19 in Ontario. From this dive into the data, I was able to understand what’s really troubling people the most – things like public health measures, economic impact, and restrictions. Based on the findings, I organized the major issues, turning them into potential opportunities to be explored and grouping the topics by similarity so that the requirements could be analyzed later in the project. To characterize the exponential behavior of the pandemic was taken as a reference for this project the **Susceptible-Infected-Removed (SIR)**, an epidemiological model based on socio-behavioral factors. This model allowed me to categorize users into three distinct segments: Susceptible, Infected and Recovered. Having gained a full understanding of user profiles and having applied the **Goals, Tasks and Actions approach** I was able to determine the user’s intent, what tasks are required to achieve that intent and what actions the user should take to complete the task and what path they should follow. It was crucial to state these elements for the Susceptible, Infected and Recovered user profiles to steer the dashboard design in the right direction and make sure that the features of the platform are in line with the specific requirements and goals of each of the user profiles. This way of using data from actions according to user profiles helped me check whether the dashboard was complicated and, therefore, confusing for users or if users had no problems with navigating through it. Out of the available key metrics, we have selected **Task Completion Rate** and **Time Spent on Tasks** because these metrics are practical in assessing users' interaction with the dashboard and the efficiency of the dashboard’s features. Through a comprehensive understanding of each user profile I was able to identify pertinent features which impacted how our dashboard for information was structured. The dwellers' frequent questions dealt with the new rules, not just receiving updated information about the pandemic. Thus, it was necessary to create a visual representation to facilitate lay users' understanding of the correlation between the pandemic and lockdown rules based on the main insights. Based on the findings made in the first and second phases it was possible to enable users to easily puzzle through several variables in the data sets and to understand how certain data points stand in relation to the general picture. Thus, having found a link between the users’ needs and the data visualization, we were able to effectively present both the relative and absolute values to help users make the right decisions and understand the correlation between pandemic data and lockdown rules. I designed the layout of the containers in a **continuous flow** to facilitate scanning on the dashboard, prioritizing the information in a natural reading pattern, and adhering to the Western left-to-right, top-to-bottom progression on the desktop version. The continuous flow can also improve the user experience by promoting retention, allowing the user to absorb and remember the information presented more effectively. As a result, I sketched a compelling visual approach to represent complex data sets. I first looked at various interests and then started designing, assuming that minimalist design can be easily ported over to the new information. I have chosen to develop different menus as this approach helps to distinguish the data and makes the navigation process smoother, and user can only pay attention to certain data sets. The main goal was to **make the navigation between these information blocks smooth and easy**, and to make the key performance indicators easy to find. I then created the sketches on the **Remarkable 2** after learning the principles of data visualization for data storytelling. Also, I established the visual hierarchy to emphasize the key information in relation to the needs stated. Therefore, it was about the time to move on to the interface once the style guide and the dashboard structure were established. Applying the principles of Gestalt, this project's style guide has a streamlined and user-friendly aesthetic. Reducing the design to a minimum and using a **card navigation** also helps to maintain the focus on the key details and to help learn the pattern of the content's relationships easily. The design also includes the modified icons from the Streamline library, to make the navigation through the pages smooth and easy. The **monochromatic color scheme with accent of bright colors** enhances the contrast and enhances the readability. To potentially reduce cognitive load in order to maximize usability I designed an interface that use monochromatic components to organize information and decrease decision making timing, and hence, emphasize on priority content. Also, for the layout design I also considered one of the **Principles of Calm Technology**, which is the principle of requiring a minimal amount of attention from the user and making the user not to be overwhelmed with data. Given this, I have reduced the number of elements per session and only highlighting the essential. The concept project was fully responsive and customized for viewing on desktops, tablets, and mobile devices, prioritizing access to the essential elements of the dashboard through a visual hierarchy. To illustrate the potential effect of the COVID-19 Dashboard, I created an **Impact Map** that shows the relationship between design choices and business and financial outcomes. **At the user level**, the dashboard is a tool that helps people make sense of local COVID-19 data more quickly and with less effort. It displays key statistics to enable informed decisions and good community safety behaviors. **From a business point of view**, the design should be easy to use so that users are able to find the information they need without having to contact support. This reduces operational pressures and increases trust in the data. Furthermore, the dashboard architecture fosters frequent visits as people come back for the latest information. **From the financial side**, the predicted effect includes the costs of reducing the number of unnecessary hospitalizations and the need for additional assistance. Improved public compliance leads to fewer preventable cases, which in turn lead to more effective use of public health spending. These connections are depicted in order to ensure that design decisions are in line with strategic objectives and thus support a user-centred approach. Having reviewed the needs assessment of the people of Ontario, my initial hypothesis was that a minimalist design in a multi-page dashboard could easily manage the growing volume of information. This was partly true; however, it was crucial to apply a more systematic, modular strategy to such an extensive and specific dataset. In the process of this work, I have found several ways in which the result could be improved: ✔ Examining a potential desktop version that would let each chart expand to fill the entire screen, giving the user a better opportunity to study the data in more detail and depth. ✔ Thinking about the process of users’ adaptation to new information and dashboard elements because it can influence how people use the interface and, therefore, how they perform tasks and set goals. Vitória, Brazil has been ranked in the Top 5 ‘Connected Smart Cities’ in Brazil. Its City Hall wanted to build Minha Vitória, a collaborative platform to share suggestions for Urban Master Planning. This would encourage interactive participation in the development of the city amongst all residents of voting age. The platform would be used to review and regulate the urban aspects of the city for the next ten years, ensuring that, when sending contributions to the city, the population's interest as a whole prevailed over individual or group interests. They hoped to generate essential insights into the improvements of the city. I worked collaboratively with professionals in Brazil and Portugal as a Project Manager. I led the project as an end-to-end process with daily remote touch-points and also contributed as a UX Designer. Being able to occupy close-up and managerial positions at once really enhanced my ideas and made me a great fit for the project. ✔ 1,340 volunteered suggestions / supports for the city's planning in 53 days. ✔ 48 proposal regulations created under shared management model. ✔ UX case study published in [**OPSI**](https://oecd-opsi.org/innovations/minha-vitoria-an-urban-master-planning-collaboration-platform/), a global reference for public innovation initiatives. Since we had a very heterogeneous target audience of more than 300,000 people, creating discrete personas could form a bias in our research. Instead, we identified people’s feelings about their contributions to the city. We conducted interviews using the **Positive Emotional Granularity Cards**, which delineate 25 positive emotions a user can have to a product. The cards help end-users report emotional experiences with a high degree of specificity. Browsing the cards, we discussed which positive emotions would be desirable to evoke on the platform. We settled on three: 1\. **Desire**. Every resident wants to live in a better city. Activities on the platform would need to pique that desire for change. 2\. **Inspiration**. This was about providing new points of view and generating simple, transformative ideas. We believed that inspiration could arise with collaborative participation. 3\. **Reliance**. To make a suggestion requires energy — energy the user won’t expend if they lose confidence in the project. We needed to inspire and maintain residents’ faith in the platform by making the process completely transparent. On this basis, ease of use and conscious thinking would be our top priorities in UX design. With stakeholders responsible for different areas of the city, we whittled down our general goals for the platform into specific topics. We also identified two key pain points. Inhabitants of the city weren’t being encouraged to participate in public decisions because they introduced competing political biases into the process. The topic was broad, technical, and lacked knowledge of the general population. We learned that the engaged population and community leaders were the most frequent participants in face-to-face meetings about the Urban Master Plan. Others tended to refrain from giving suggestions but were happy to raise their hands when they agreed or disagreed. So, in a meeting with the entire project team, we looked for ideas to make online contribution dynamic. For the development of the platform, I created an organization chart with all our needs, highlighting comments related to external actions (which depended on technology or the City of Vitória official website). By simply selecting their city of residence, the user was activated in the system. After selecting their neighbourhood, they were allowed to share their ideas. The user had two ways to contribute: sending a suggestion or supporting one or more opinions posted on the platform. We decided to implement a social media login, so that users could see friends’ publications and their own, and an interactive map, which allowed them to browse suggestions by topic and upvote any they supported. We chose two registration options for the platform's launch: log in with Facebook (since it is the social network with the most significant number of users in the city) and log in with email. We then turned all these requirements into low-fidelity sketches. At this point, we noted some technical questions and features to be tested in the wireframe, like the dropdown menu and text box for choosing a topic. We considered things like a minimum number of characters for a suggestion (10) and forwarding suggestions for approval before publication. Our goal was to create a friendly layout that met all our prerequisites. Unfortunately, Facebook took longer than expected to approve the API and get it working. But this was a useful lesson to learn and something I'd be sure to consider in future. Next, we developing medium-fidelity, navigable wireframe using [**Axure RP**](https://www.axure.com/) to test the functionality with users. Calls to action like "Contribute" and "Send your suggestion" clarified to the user that their participation was meaningful. In developing a admin dashboard, we decided to include KPIs such as topics most covered by a region, subjects most commented on, and primary needs, in the official report. On the “Suggest” screen, the user chose the topic of interest then sent their suggestion, pending administrator approval. Meanwhile, they could browse other ideas using the timeline or map. On the home page, we defined the social and email login buttons and a menu. Since the subject matter was technically beyond the general knowledge of the average user, we also incorporated frequently asked questions. Users’ public identification including support and sharing options were also included in the wireframe. Distinct colors differentiated each of the five central topics of the project, allowing the user to identify areas of interest visually in the interactive map. We planned to integrate with Google Maps to show pins around the city coded by neighbourhood and topic. We developed the platform’s layout, which used the city as a background, with this in mind. **Suggestion:** Users could navigate through the interactive map or scroll by neighborhood **Suggestion:** Users could submit suggestions based on city topics **Suggestion:** Users could submit suggestions based on city topics Due to the delivery deadline, the team decided to simplify the dashboard so as not to jeopardize the release schedule set by the client. These were amended in version 2.0 of the prototype. We revised the responsive design to work on older devices, created an email confirmation to track the user journey from registration to suggestion submission, included more questions in the FAQ to help the user understand the platform, and revised the Google Maps API to reduce loading time. Since so many problems were related to the internet connection, we suggested that the city offer free public WiFi in squares and at landmarks. In the first stage of the Urban Master Plan review process, the residents of Vitória made 1,340 suggestions / supports in just 53 days. This was a really wonderful outcome for the city. Data was collected from the suggestions, analyzed, and compiled into a report. From this, we identified people’s expectations for the next 10 years. It truly was an invaluable insight. After that, 48 proposal regulations were created within the shared management model. The UX case study has been published in the Observatory of Public Sector Innovation - OPSI, a European forum based in Paris. OPSI shares outstanding public sector innovation initiatives and works with governments to understand and encourage new approaches to solving complex societal problems, helping them explore new possibilities. The client had reduced the project timeline by almost half in the middle of development. As is so often the case, the whole project could have been even more successful with more time. Nonetheless, we stripped everything back to the essential requirements and maintained an agile approach to attain success. How might we enhance the user experience of online services for a Canadian law firm specializing in international trade, ensuring alignment with business goals and prioritizing user needs? As a UX Lead, I applied my expertise in design thinking methodologies to drive the refinement process, working as a Workshop Facilitator. I carefully planned and executed remote workshops, leveraging various design thinking techniques. Through these workshops, I collaboratively identified design goals derived from problem statements, conducted Usability Studies, and developed User Personas. Additionally, I redefined the Information Architecture structure for the website, ensuring its alignment with the user needs and expectations in a global level. Throughout the project, we turning group discussions into tangible outcomes, identifying problem statements that transformed into actionable opportunities from usability, strategy, and brand awareness perspectives. To achieve these results, we actively asked insightful questions, merged similar ideas, and subjected them to rigorous testing by considering various criteria. We also comprehensively analyzed complex situations, advocating for practical solutions. This design thinking process involved rationalizing ideas and focusing on workable solutions. Additionally, we utilized company principles as a parameter to evaluate decision-making processes. I employed **metrics** and **KPI models** to support design decisions and gain an understanding of the current **user behavior** on the website. I identified pain points, synthesized the findings, and presented them in a **Lightning Talk** format, highlighting relevant insights. Ensuring that all stakeholders were on the same page, I planned and conducted remote Design Thinking workshops using Miro. These workshops served as a means to comprehend our users, identify real problems to solve, facilitate sessions to generate potential solutions, and analyze the effort versus impact to pinpoint the best opportunities. I organized and guided the following remote workshops: By empathizing with their experiences, we gained valuable insights that guided our decision-making process. By reframing problems into actionable statements, we encouraged creative thinking and brainstormed innovative solutions. By harnessing the collective intelligence of our team and stakeholders to generate a wide range of ideas, we explored different avenues, pushing the boundaries of innovation. By utilizing structured decision-making techniques, we efficiently narrow down our options, identifying the most viable solutions. Based on the gathered insights from data to workshops, I created personas defining the needs, behaviors, and goals. These personas represent fictional user profiles. The information for creating the personas was collected from user-centred workshops, where we identified the users' challenges and pain points. The knowledge of the target audience greatly assisted in developing tasks to be fulfilled on the website, enabling a preliminary study based on the current information architecture. Once the tasks were created, the subsequent phase involved carrying out a Navigability Study by employing the Tree Jack method to address the most significant problem statements. The significance of possessing a diverse target audience, as determined by the user personas, became apparent during this stage. To ensure a comprehensive evaluation, users from the UK, the USA, Mexico, and Canada were included in the study. This diverse representation allowed for a more accurate assessment of the website's information architecture and its effectiveness across different cultural contexts. During the test, users were presented with the defined tasks and asked to navigate through the website to accomplish them. Metrics such as success rate, time spent on each task, and objectivity were measured and analyzed. Based on the valuable insights uncovered during the navigability study, we refine the categories and labels of the website's navigation and menu. This refinement aimed to enhance the user experience and improve findability by aligning them with the newly established infrastructure, features, and information hierarchy. By taking action on these findings, we ensured that the website's usability was optimized, catering to the needs and expectations of the targeted user profiles. During the refinement phase, I conducted a thorough evaluation of the information architecture using IA Lenses Cards. These lenses provided a framework to assess the strength of the decisions made and the overall robustness of the structure. By asking probing questions and reviewing the new information architecture based on best practices, I ensured that the underlying structure could effectively address the identified problems and provide a solid foundation for solutions. The insights gathered from this evaluation process were synthesized into components that served as valuable resources for prioritization and decision-making. By leveraging these synthesized components, I was able to make informed choices, prioritize key elements, and drive the refinement process to enhance the overall user experience. Valuable lessons were learned that not only contributed to the success of the UX strategy but also provided guidance for future design implementations. I would like to emphasize the key insights gained from the experience, focusing on the importance of clear communication, user-centric design features, language considerations, and regional understanding. Above all, I underscore the importance of ongoing iteration. I firmly believe that a successful UX strategy requires continuous nurturing and refinement. While I cannot publish it due to a non-disclosure agreement, the lessons I learned and my high-level overview are well worth sharing. After immersing myself in a confidential Government of Canada UX project, I decided to share the lessons learned. I’ve learned more by getting my hands dirty in new areas of study that I really needed to dedicate myself to than by doing what I do on a daily basis. My challenge as a UX professional was to develop alterity in this case study as a **UX Designer** and **Workshop Facilitator**. Even though I can’t share all of my findings, saving the key ideas to remember is the most important thing. It’s all about learning. Here are some key takeaways. Spend more time investigating the problem than prototyping. Diving deep into the research to **understand the core of the problem to be solved is half of the work** in a user experience project. The prototype may be visually appealing but will possibly run into many problems, kicking the main issues into the long grass. Designing without grounding and justification in every design decision can fail in the long term. You can’t see the problem immediately, but the end-user does. Devoting more time to assumptions is an outstanding opportunity to build self-justifying prototypes. Create expectations and fulfill them: this is basically what you should keep in mind when defining expected outputs at each step of the user experience process. By defining the desired result with the specific task, it is possible to verify the project's success or failure based on the final delivery. It allows you to delimit the performance of the project, avoiding dispersion. However, for expected outputs to work, it is necessary to define the project's expected outcomes as a whole clearly. Design goals help the project to be more achievable. Design goals help us stay **focused on the project’s most important tasks** and make sure the **designs align with the primary goals**. Working with design goals helps align stakeholder expectations and understand user pain points, especially if the project already has some improvement insights based on previous research or ongoing implementation tests. It can be tough to set design goals if your team doesn’t know specifically what to do. Therefore, you should not focus on specific design features but on **how the design might be considered successful**. Prioritize tasks based on data rather than personas based on average behavior. When the segment for a product is heterogeneous or too broad, it is necessary to **give up creating a persona**. Yes, I know it may seem frustrating to research without looking at an idealized persona with all their favourite behavioural characteristics. The challenge in creating data-driven tasks lies in **testing hypotheses**. Analyzing the data makes it possible to collect relevant information when **looking at the recurrence of facts or identify different ways of solving the same problem from users’ decisions**. Therefore, defining jobs to be done can make more sense than trying to create proto-personas. It is dangerous to average behaviours and list actions in a profile if your audience is too broad. F**ocus on completing the job rather than imagining what your ideal persona would look like**. Poly-hierarchical breadcrumb trails require in-depth analysis. Working with polyhierarchies in a project is a double challenge. To guide the user to a page, it's crucial to work effectively on how the hierarchies will work on the path, not to conflict with the navigation flow considering subpages’ structures. For this reason, it's necessary to **analyze the macro navigation flow**. Often you will not be able to modify the information architecture structure of the master page. Still, you can verify how the ‘sister pages’ use the breadcrumb trail feature and make an in-depth analysis to **identify gaps and test patterns**. **Baseline testing** is an excellent method to observe this behaviour. When you look at how many backtracks a user makes browsing the website, you can understand their challenges in finding what they are seeking. Affordance problems can provide valuable clues for visual storytelling. We have all had a first experience with a product, and in most cases, I suppose we didn’t have a tutorial on how to use it. Whether by feeling, recommendation, or observation, the fact is that we have learned to use it in practice. Adapting this learning in the short term considering navigation on a website is a challenge when the user needs to **take some action** and is unsure if the chosen path is the correct one. To reduce uncertainty, it is necessary to simplify the complexity of the interface. However, when this is not sufficient for understanding the product or service, provide clues to lead the user to the desired findings. A simple way to do this is to tell stories. The **storytelling process captures the user’s attention if created visually, initially allowing a context about functionality, followed by an everyday example and step by-step**. By reducing the learning effort, we reduce the user’s chances of feeling unable to perform a specific task and increase their understanding and learning in the short term. **The more information is available to the user, the more difficult it will be for them to make a decision**. We can include other implications, such as giving up on a task or figuring out other solutions to the search problem (e.g., searching for a term on Google). **Too much content does not necessarily lead to enlightenment**. You need to take away the overflow, use helpful resources if necessary, and look for ways to shrink the path. You can utilize various features, such as buttons, categories, and actionable icons, to facilitate visual recognition. Another important tip is to **review the website's taxonomy** and consider creating categories, filters, or **actionable features** that are simple and convenient to apply. The more you exemplify, the more likely you’ll reduce the user’s mental overload. Consequently, he will spend less time being idle on the site, which will **lower the bounce rate**, assist him in locating the content, and make a second visit more likely. To create a consistent design, the focus needs to be placed on the consistency of the message conveyed. **A quality visual design does not support irrelevant content**. Better **understanding the circumstances surrounding the user** is the first step when it comes to content research. The analysis involves **reading time availability, location, behavioural access condition, and expectations**. User research can assist in understanding the user’s context and viewing issues to be addressed as opportunities to create relevant content. The UX Designer is not directly responsible for producing the content, but they need to work directly with the UX Writer to make the work relevant. This will cause the interface to be even more user-friendly, offering a **more fluid browsing experience**. Understand project constraints, assess technical feasibility, consider pros/cons from an execution standpoint, and evaluate design content from different perspectives. **Embrace criticism as a learning opportunity**. I’ve listed ten lessons, but the reality is that we never stop learning. Challenges are excellent learning opportunities, which present themselves in different contexts in the UX Designer’s craft. Despite months of environmental education, elementary students have not fully embraced sustainability, remaining focused on basic practices like trash disposal. The educational program requires a redesign to effectively communicate the broader impacts of production and consumption processes, aiming to cultivate deeper understanding and actionable, sustainable habits in students. In the e-learning project, I served as the UX/UI Designer and Researcher, handling all the planning, research, and design work. The team also included a Literature and Writing Teacher, who provided educational guidance, a Computer Lab Instructor, ensuring technical implementation, and a Web Developer, responsible for programming. Each member's direct contributions were pivotal to the project's development and success. The study of the studied concepts and the Teacher and Computer Lab Instructor's educational objectives were elaborated on a conceptual map of the project to guide the segmentation of the content. Based on that, we delimited the segmentation related to Consumption from the study and research of environmental aspects. To spark creative thinking and shift our perspective on the project, we reframe the problem statement as a question, using the "How might we" statement. We compiled every team member's ideas on sticky notes, allowing everyone to present and vote on the best concepts. Among these, the most resonant and clearly defined idea emerged as "Encouraging experience with daily life examples," showing a direct correlation with the answers we gathered. I gained insights to create a point-of-view from a more in-depth understanding of users, their needs and most essential insights. We provided a broad with enough scope to start thinking about solutions. After according with this decision, I started developing this e-learning by analyzing the audiovisual material, verifying the steps involved in constructing the content, the type of visual communication, the technology used and the way of approaching the theme. We apply two types of questionnaires to students during the class period. The surveys involved questions related to habits, customs, communication, and users' visual preferences. The qualitative research result helped us find the answer to the student’s intentions when dealing with e-learning. In our quest to ensure the integrity of our research, we made a crucial move: double-checking the data. This wasn't just about dotting i's and crossing t's. It was key to making sure our e-learning development hit the mark. We grouped the students' mentioned references, routines, and wishes, setting the stage for a focus group where they could weigh in on their choices. This wasn't just a chat session. It was a strategic step to create affinity associations, leading us to craft user personas that truly resonate. **Interest groups:** Technology (1), Sport (2), Leisure (3), and Style (4) This approach isn't just about getting insights. It's about getting the right insights and turning them into actionable, effective e-learning tools. From the result of the data collection, we created the characters' actions. Different possibilities for choosing experiences were defined, grouping them based on correlations. The students’ references, routines and desires became a big panel with four major interest groups. The groups were defined from the collected data. It served as a starting point to create the content and the characters of the user personas. After students chose the groups, I collected the relevant information from each cluster to create the user personas. The entire process of developing personas has been documented. I considered the needs, the frustrations, the personality and the main activities. The students did not know, but each group chosen was related to a persona. The test then validated that the students represented all personas. With that, we developed the characters of the game based on the main activities of the students. **Characters:** Zeca - sport / Tom - technology / Paty - style / Lana - leisure Our research shows that users connect with content through their personal experiences. With this in mind, we've designed our platform to be intuitive: users select a character that reflects their behavior to access content. This user-focused approach, complete with a detailed task flow, was shared with our web developers to ensure a seamless and relatable user experience. After feedback, I developed version 2.0 with technical details to facilitate understanding and e-learning development. Students could have three different performances in the game: insufficient, low or reasonable. More than assessing who won or lost, the idea is to generate reflections from the research data's stories. With touch-enabled devices, users are very close to the screen and use both thumbs to touch, creating accessible touch areas at the bottom. I also considered the touch areas, which would help in the game's performance and handling. Based on the information collected, I adapted the chosen wireframe and the definition of the other screens from the drafts. I set the resolution to 1024 × 768 pixels using the net main layout to optimize the content for a satisfactory view (iPad mini 7.9''). For the main screen, I crafted a layout showcasing the character's dialogue alongside interactive buttons for option selection. Establishing a clear hierarchy was crucial, particularly for displaying the result index, guiding users to understand if they're on the right track. After iterating through six drafts, the seventh version successfully met all game requirements, setting the stage for the next phase of screen design. We prioritized the strategic positioning of characters to balance the game's visual elements. After evaluating three proposals, Wireframe 2 emerged as the best choice, providing an ideal foundation for balanced and engaging game development. Among several proposals, the logotype option, featuring a speech bubble symbolizing the game's decision-based narrative, was chosen for its relevance to the students' reality. The logotype was crafted to reflect key concepts like "Time," "Environment," and "Action and Reaction." Our color palette derived from ten child-centric environmental websites. We chose dominant colors and their hex codes for optimal monitor compatibility. For typography, we defined Calibre as the primary font, prioritizing legibility based on [psychological and design research](https://www.maxwell.vrac.puc-rio.br/17387/17387.PDF). It's a sans-serif font with rounded endings, ideal for web readability, especially for children. Our alternative font, Sunday Morning, adds a playful, hand-drawn touch for the project's educational theme. In creating the initial scenario, we depicted an urban city context, incorporating a box symbolizing the impact of students' decisions on the planet. This approach aims to encourage thoughtful reflection on sustainability. For the progress bar, we used pictograms for easy recognition, focusing on "ecological," "economic," and "well-being" aspects. These were represented by distinct icons - a tree leaf, a dollar sign, and a human figure, respectively, using contrasting colors for visibility. In this step, design principles and educational needs come together, a result of thoughtful planning and creative execution in our user interfaces. **Character screen:** Turning actions into consequences **Help section:** an explanation of each element of the game In the Informatics Lab, the Instructor introduced a game linked to the students' sustainability studies, deepening their understanding. Both the Instructor and Teacher guided the e-learning, with the game's sequential content acting like a structured study program. Learning occurred in three modes: dynamic, stable groups, or solo, based on our research. This approach tailored the experience to individual preferences and learning styles. Teachers assessed the game's impact by comparing student behaviors before and after gameplay and analyzing their in-game decisions. Classroom discussions and observations supplemented this evaluation, offering a comprehensive view of the educational outcomes. For the usability test, we selected a group of 12 students from different classes with diverse demographics, representing different user personas. The selected users passed for 4 testing functionalities. The "Help" section, although utilized by three users to determine the appropriate responses to activities, did not indicate a failure to complete the tasks. Once they accessed the "Help" section and understood the mechanics, all three were able to proceed with the game smoothly. The fact that four users initially struggled to understand the reaction mechanisms and scoring of choices raised a red flag for potential improvement for the Instructions screen. However, by the end of the test, these users had gained clarity. When asked, they confirmed understanding the outcomes of their decisions, including what they gained or lost, and how it affected their levels in "ecological," "economical," and "well-being" aspects. To improve students' understanding of "Instructions," I plan to introduce a graphic animation showing the effect of their clicks on choice levels. Also, making scores from each action visible, especially in the 'Help' section, will aid in decision-making. In future game versions, I aim to develop characters' visual stories for a more tangible understanding. I discovered that environmental issues are deeply tied to human actions. In my UX research and UI design, I explored various methods and visual elements to make e-learning more accessible and engaging. This approach helped students better understand and feel connected to the game, making environmental issues more relevant to them. However, gauging quality by performance can be subjective. Therefore, the Literature and Writing Teacher established a benchmark based on students' reflective writing throughout the year to assess the project's effectiveness. Our e-learning tests showed that users can learn about sustainability in a fun and visually intuitive manner. Recognizing the evolving nature of this project, I plan to continuously refine the game, conducting further usability tests, reaching a broader audience, and incorporating diverse perspectives to improve the game's relevance and avoid stereotypes. How might we sensitize people spontaneously on the internet to donate locks of hair for a social cause? Encourage hair donation for wigs to help children regain self-esteem during cancer treatment. We identified the hypotheses that need to be tested to narrow the path between donor and donation. In light of this, we came up with a few premises, all related to the chances of hair donation: We refined and decided to go with a hypothesis that would be more useful to learn and that we could validate the information online. People who use the phases of the moon as an indicator for their haircuts may be prone to donating. According to lore, the moon phases can interfere with hair strands' growth and, consequently, their aesthetics. But before creating it, we decided to understand the target behaviour to create the persona. To do so, we used Facebook’s Audience Insights feature, filtering the search for terms correlated to beauty, astrology and lunar hair cut. We've found that women exhibit a high level of engagement with advertisements, particularly when these ads resonate with their personal and professional experiences. Many work in fields related to social action, which increases their likelihood of participating in campaigns with social purposes. With this insight, we developed a persona profile. This profile is crafted from careful demographic research, identifying not just basic characteristics, but also the motivations, interests, fundamental needs, and challenges faced by this group. This approach helps us create a realistic and well-founded user persona, enabling more effective communication and a design more aligned with the expectations and needs of this audience. People who want to take care of their hair see an ad about the best time to cut their hair according to the moon phases. But, intentionally, after clicking on an ad, they would end up being redirected to the campaign’s website: Find out which moon phase is perfect for cutting your hair. The proposal was to use the curiosity factor to attract attention and then show an impactful message: Donating your hair to children with cancer isn't about the moon's phase. It's all up to you. From the storyboard, I created six scenes representing the user’s journey from the moment they are impacted by the ad when they share their photo (before and after) on social media using the hashtag #DonateYourHair. We created the wireframe to remember that the landing page would need to highlight the donation form, explain step-by-step how to donate, answer questions, and introduce the NGO to build trust. We also focusing on specific elements spread out over the page layout to get the user’s attention using buttons that allow visual contrast, including the donate and share buttons. To define the colour palette, we based it on the shades identified in the client’s logos, creating elements for the landing page. We used the Raleway font. Besides being open source, it has good legibility for electronic devices and a family for different weights. To encourage hair donation and mitigate cognitive effort in the step of filling in user data, we decided to test the following hypothesis: We believe that using a form with little data collection may increase the conversion rate because it will be faster and simpler to fill in the registration. We identified that stage 4 of the user journey was the most critical since it represented the moment of decision and could directly impact the results. Therefore, we run an A/B Testing on the website, implementing two different forms with 50% percent of traffic to experiment by isolating the filling fields as a variable via Web Analytics. We created a simple form with the fields name, email and phone. The idea was to shorten the path between interest and donation by reducing the form. The user might have questions about the different ways to donate. Therefore, we implemented procedures to make the donation decision more manageable, including a dropdown menu on the website form with the following options: We needed to determine if this implementation would facilitate or obstruct the process of form completion on our website. Our A/B testing delivered clear insights. We discovered that Version B of our form design significantly increased donations. This adjustment resulted in the conversion rate increasing from 3% to 12%, which is an increase of 9 percentage points. For this reason, the hypothesis created has been refuted. The enhanced landing page achieved a remarkable 8.75% rate in donations. Qlik Application Automation is a no-code platform that helps users to automate tasks and data workflows, integrating Qlik Cloud with hundreds of SaaS apps to simplify processes and improve efficiency. The COVID-19 Ontario Dashboard was designed to visually present key performance indicators (KPIs) more effectively, aligning pandemic-related data with the province’s evolving public health guidelines. Minha Vitória is a collaborative platform designed to enable the collective review and regulation of a Brazilian city with its dwellers for the next ten years. Reaction is a game designed for elementary school students, using behavioral and cognitive studies to teach about conscious consumption in an interactive way. How Ideation Sessions and Design Thinking Workshops helped T&D International identify user problems and generate potential solutions, allowing the expansion of law services for international trades into new countries. I worked end-to-end on a user experience project for the public sector in Canada. While I cannot publish it due to a non-disclosure agreement, the lessons I learned and my high-level overview are well worth sharing. Automation should simplify work, not make it harder. Yet in Qlik Cloud, setting up and managing workflows often felt overwhelming. The experience was too technical, driving some users to abandon automation altogether. Even experts struggled: the builder felt disconnected from the rest of the platform, templates were seen as rigid, and visibility into performance was limited. Troubleshooting became guesswork. **So how might we design automation that users can understand, control, and trust.** Responsible for re-architecting the Qlik Application Automation experience during the integration of Blendr.io into Qlik Cloud. Simplified automation setup and monitoring, redesigned the template picker, and improved performance visibility. Collaborated with a distributed cross-functional team across the UK, Canada, Sweden, Spain, and Belgium to align the new layer with Qlik’s design system and strategic goals, grounded in user feedback and telemetry. I tackled key user challenges and refined the automation experience through a structured UX approach, grounded in real user feedback, behavioral insights, and continuous iteration. **Qualitative research with customers** to understand **pain points and challenges** in partnership with the UX Research team. Analyzed **behavioral data and user frictions** using Data Analytics and reviewed feedback from the **Qlik Community**. Researched competing automation platforms to identify best practices in **workflow setup and monitoring**. **Mapped potential use cases and scenarios in collaborative boards**, translating technical challenges into actionable design insights Mapped out **user journeys** to highlight major **friction points**. Applied **progressive disclosure** principles to guide users gradually through complex steps. Redesigned the **Template Picker interface** to surface relevant workflows clearly. Designed a comprehensive **automation and metrics dashboard** to centralize control, monitoring, and troubleshooting. Refined the automation builder to align with **Sprout Design System**, ensuring interface consistency. Introduced **smart error handling**, with clear alerts, suggested fixes, and interactive debugging tools for faster troubleshooting. **Optimized automation monitoring**, giving users real-time visibility and control over execution status and system performance. **Refined through iterative testing**, ensuring every update addressed real user needs. The old experience exposed everything at once, leaving users without guidance, clear flow, or confidence. I redesigned Qlik Application Automation to turn a fragmented, overly technical tool into an integrated part of Qlik Cloud, making it easier for users to build, monitor, and trust their workflows. My team pinpointed **four key areas where users struggled**. By rethinking the core experience, I simplified setup, improved template relevance, and introduced visibility into automation performance, helping both **Analytics DevOps** and **App Creators** act faster on actionable insights. INTEGRATING A STARTUP PRODUCT INTO THE QLIK CLOUD ECOSYSTEM **Challenge:** When Qlik acquired [**Blendr.io**](https://www.qlik.com/us/news/company/press-room/press-releases/qlik-acquires-blendr-io-to-drive-real-time-data-for-action-and-insights), the automation builder felt like a separate product, it didn’t fit within Qlik Cloud’s design system. **Issue:** Users found the interface inconsistent with Qlik’s platform, leading to a fragmented experience that made it harder to trust the system and navigate between features. These inconsistencies disrupted flow and created confusion, especially for experienced users accustomed to Qlik’s visual and interaction patterns. **Solution:** I redesigned the interface to align with Qlik’s UI, making automation feel like a natural part of the platform, so users could navigate it just as easily as any other Qlik feature. **Challenge:** The Template Picker was meant to simplify workflow creation, but users weren’t using it. **Issue:** Beginners felt lost, while experienced users found it too limiting. **Solution:** I revamped the Template Picker UI, reorganized categories for better navigation, and made templates more flexible, helping both new and advanced users get more value from them. **Challenge:** Many users (especially those without technical backgrounds) found workflow setup overwhelming. **Issue:** The process was too complicated, and the interface didn’t offer enough guidance. **Solution:** I added guided setup steps, a more structured layout, and easy access to pre-built templates, making it simpler for users to configure workflows without getting stuck. **Challenge:** Users needed real-time visibility into automation performance but had no way of knowing whether workflows succeeded, failed, or stalled. Without clear feedback or entry points for troubleshooting, the system felt unreliable, especially for business-critical use cases. **Issue:** There was no central dashboard for tracking automation status, troubleshooting errors, or managing integrations. **Solution:** I designed a comprehensive automation dashboard that let users: To bring these improvements to life, I built an interactive prototype that walks through the full automation experience. **01** How users move from the Qlik Cloud Hub to Qlik Automation, setting up and fine-tuning workflows. **02** The redesigned Template Picker (built with Illustrators) to make categories visually clear and easy to navigate. **03** The automation execution phase, where users can connect apps and tweak workflows right from the sidebar. **04** The monitoring dashboard, giving users a clear view of automation status and full control over execution. Great design goes beyond how things look. **It removes friction and makes a real difference**. The updates to Qlik Application Automation led to measurable improvements: **01** Successfully transformed a complex, standalone automation product into an integrated Qlik Cloud feature, without compromising on usability or system performance. **02** Leveraged close collaboration across design, product, and engineering to translate technical complexity into a clear, no-code user experience. **03** Learned to prioritize ruthlessly in high-pressure environments, focusing on what delivered the most value within tight timelines.
